Nutrition for Strength, Performance & Longevity: Fueling Your Body for Life
Nutrition is one of the most important pieces of fitness, health, athletic performance, recovery, and longevity, and it’s also one of the areas where people can easily become overwhelmed.
What should I eat? How much protein do I need? Do I need to track macros? Should I take supplements? Do my nutritional needs change as I get older?
There is no shortage of information available, but more information doesn’t always make things easier.
I’m Nicole Zapoli, founder of NZ Fitness, with 41 years of athletic training and more than 25 years of coaching experience across multiple disciplines of fitness, sport, health, and wellness. One of the things I’ve learned over those years is that nutrition doesn’t need to be perfect or unnecessarily complicated to be effective.
It needs to support you, your body, your goals, your training, your lifestyle, and the season of life you’re currently in.
Nutrition Is Part of the Foundation
Think of your body as a high performance machine. Training provides the stimulus, but nutrition provides much of what your body needs to perform, recover, repair, and adapt.
And our nutritional needs aren’t static throughout our lives.
Training volume, activity level, body composition, sleep, stress, hormones, health, goals, schedule, and age can all influence what our bodies need. That’s one reason I don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to nutrition.
My approach to coaching has been shaped by decades of experience across gymnastics, dance, cheer, CrossFit, bodybuilding, powerlifting, tactical training, Olympic weightlifting, yoga and Ayurveda, and U.S. Olympic strength and conditioning methodologies.
But regardless of the sport or goal, the foundation remains remarkably important: fuel your body well enough to support what you’re asking it to do.
Strength, Muscle & Nutrition as We Age
Building and maintaining muscle is important throughout our lives, but it becomes an increasingly valuable part of supporting our health and quality of life as we get older.
Strength and muscle aren’t just about aesthetics.
They contribute to our ability to move well, remain independent, perform everyday activities, continue participating in the sports and activities we love, and maintain a strong, capable body throughout life.
Resistance training provides the stimulus for building and maintaining muscle, but training is only one part of the equation. Our bodies also need adequate nutrition and recovery to support that work.
That’s why I look at training and nutrition together rather than treating them as completely separate pieces.

Building a Strong Nutritional Foundation
There isn’t one perfect nutritional blueprint for everyone, but there are several foundational areas I consistently look at with clients:
Protein: Protein provides the amino acids our bodies use to repair and build muscle tissue. Getting adequate protein becomes especially important when strength, muscle development, recovery, and maintaining lean body mass are priorities.
Overall Energy Intake: We need enough energy to support our training, recovery, daily activity, and goals. Consistently under fueling can work against performance and recovery just as eating beyond our individual needs can work against certain body composition goals.
Carbohydrates and Fats: Protein gets a lot of attention, but carbohydrates and dietary fats matter too. Carbohydrates can be an important source of energy for training and performance, while dietary fats play important roles throughout the body. The appropriate balance depends on the individual.
Hydration: Hydration supports performance, recovery, temperature regulation, digestion, and normal physiological function. It’s simple, but incredibly important.
Micronutrients & Food Quality: Vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a variety of nutrient dense foods all contribute to the bigger picture of health and performance.
Supplementation: Supplements can be useful in certain situations, but they are exactly that… supplements to the foundation. Individual needs, dietary intake, health considerations, and appropriate professional guidance should determine whether supplementation makes sense.
Nutrition Coaching Is About More Than Numbers
Nutrition coaching isn’t just about calories, macros, meal plans, charts, or numbers.
There is a human being behind all of those numbers.
Someone has a job, a family, preferences, traditions, travel, stress, social events, training goals, responsibilities, and an actual life they want to enjoy.
That matters.
I don’t want someone to simply follow instructions because I told them what to eat. I want them to understand why they’re making certain choices, learn how their body responds, and develop the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions for themselves.
Because ultimately, sustainability matters.
You can follow the “perfect” nutrition plan for a few weeks, but if it doesn’t fit your life, it probably isn’t going to help you build the habits you need for the next several decades.
Fitness, Nutrition & the Bigger Picture
This is also why nutrition is only one piece of the way I coach.
In my book, Live FIT From the Inside Out, I share my SHIFTS Framework: Sleep, Hydration, Intake, Fitness, Thoughts, and Sunshine.
These foundational areas are interconnected.
You can have a great nutrition strategy, but if you’re chronically sleep deprived, overwhelmed, dehydrated, barely moving, or struggling to recover, we need to look at the bigger picture.
Health and performance aren’t created by one perfect meal or workout. They’re built through the things we do consistently over time.

Building Strength for the Life Ahead
At 43, this conversation is personal for me too.
I’ve spent 41 years training as an athlete, and my goals have continued to evolve through different sports, competitions, careers, pregnancies, motherhood, and seasons of life. What my body needs today isn’t necessarily identical to what it needed at 20, and I don’t expect it to be.
That doesn’t mean our expectations for ourselves have to become smaller as we get older.
It means we continue learning how to train, fuel, recover, and care for our bodies in ways that support what we want them to be capable of next.
For me, building and maintaining strength and muscle isn’t simply about how we look. It’s about performance, capability, resilience, longevity, vitality, and quality of life.
Nutrition helps support that foundation.
And whether you’re 25, 45, 65, or beyond, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s learning how to consistently give your body what it needs to support the life you want to live.
Live STRONG. Live HEALTHY. Live HAPPY.
