Movement of the Week /// The Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension

Movement of the Week /// The Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension
This week's movement is one of my favorite upper body accessory movements: the Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension.
While it is often viewed as a tricep exercise, it offers far more than that. When performed correctly, this movement develops upper body strength, shoulder stability, mobility, coordination, and pressing power all at the same time.
If you're looking for an exercise that helps build stronger triceps while improving the health and function of your shoulders, this is a movement worth incorporating into your routine.
Why I Like This Movement
One of the reasons I frequently program the Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension is because it challenges multiple components of upper body fitness simultaneously.
This movement helps develop:
Tricep strength
Shoulder stability
Lat engagement
Upper body coordination
Mobility through the shoulders and lats
Pressing strength and power
Unlike traditional tricep isolation exercises, the rolling variation allows you to move through a larger range of motion while integrating multiple muscle groups throughout the movement.
Who Can Benefit?
This movement is an excellent option for individuals looking to:
Build a stronger and healthier upper body
Improve shoulder stability and control
Increase upper body mobility
Enhance pressing strength
Add variety to their training program
The strength and stability developed through this exercise can transfer well to movements such as:
Push ups
Bench press
Handstand push ups
Overhead pressing
Dips
Gymnastics based movements
Whether you're an athlete, recreational exerciser, or someone looking to improve overall movement quality, this exercise can be a valuable addition to your program.

Coaching Points
1. Create a Stable Upper Back
Before beginning the movement, pull your shoulder blades together and firmly press your upper back into the bench.
This creates a stable foundation and allows you to maintain better control throughout the exercise.
2. Keep the Dumbbells Aligned with Your Sternum
Proper alignment helps ensure the triceps are challenged effectively while maintaining a safe and efficient shoulder position.
3. Engage the Entire Body
Although this is primarily an upper body exercise, don't forget about the rest of your body.
Create tension through your trunk and lower body to improve overall stability and control.
4. Keep the Elbows In
Maintaining a tucked elbow position helps engage the triceps and lats while promoting better shoulder mechanics.
5. Control the Descent
Lower the dumbbells until your elbows reach approximately 90 degrees.
From there, continue lowering the dumbbells past your head while maintaining that elbow angle.
This portion of the movement places the triceps, lats, and shoulder girdle under significant tension while moving through a larger range of motion.
6. Use the Lats to Initiate the Return
As you reverse the movement, think about pulling your elbows back through using your lats while maintaining control.
Once the elbows return to position, finish by extending the arms and fully contracting the triceps at the top.
What Problems Does This Movement Solve?
One of the reasons I like this exercise so much is that it addresses several common limitations I see in athletes and clients.
Limited Shoulder Stability
Many people struggle with pressing exercises because they lack stability and control around the shoulder joint.
This exercise helps strengthen the muscles responsible for creating a more stable shoulder position.
Tricep Strength Plateaus
If your tricep development has stalled, introducing a new movement pattern and training stimulus can help continue progress.
Limited Range of Motion
Because the exercise moves through a larger range than many traditional tricep exercises, it can also help improve mobility throughout the shoulders, lats, and upper body.
Why Include It in Your Program?
The Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension offers several unique benefits:
Improved upper body strength
Better shoulder stability
Increased mobility
Enhanced pressing performance
Greater muscular development throughout the triceps
Improved movement quality and control
It's one of those rare exercises that allows you to build strength while simultaneously improving mobility and stability.

Final Thoughts
The Dumbbell Rolling Tricep Extension is much more than a tricep exercise.
When performed correctly, it can help improve upper body strength, shoulder stability, mobility, pressing power, and overall movement quality.
Start with a manageable weight, focus on proper mechanics, and prioritize control throughout the entire range of motion.
As always, quality movement comes first.
