Mindset Minefields: Breaking Free from Negative Thinking

Mindset Minefields: Breaking Free from Negative Thinking

September 07, 202610 min read

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in decades of coaching is that the toughest obstacles aren’t always physical.

They’re mental.

Time and again, I’ve seen people held back not by their bodies, but by the stories they tell themselves.

The most common traps sound something like this:

  • “I can’t start until I’m in better shape.”

  • “I don’t have time.”

  • “It has to be perfect or it doesn’t count.”

  • “I’ll never measure up.”

These thoughts sneak in quietly and shape how you see yourself and what you believe you’re capable of. I call them mindset minefields because they can stop progress before it even starts.

And the tricky thing about them is that when you’ve repeated the same thought long enough, it can stop feeling like a thought at all. It starts feeling like a fact.

But it isn’t.

The good news is that you can learn to recognize these patterns, challenge them, and create a stronger mindset that actually supports the life you’re trying to build.

How Limiting Beliefs Slowwww Progress

Limiting beliefs are heavy. They can weigh you down before you’ve even taken the first step.

When you convince yourself that you can’t start until you lose weight, get stronger, have more time, or life finally slows down, you stay stuck waiting for circumstances that may never arrive.

When you believe an old injury defines what your body will always be capable of, you stop exploring what is possible.

I’ve watched so many people struggle under the burden of “I can’t.” Some are afraid of re-injury. Others believe they don’t have the discipline to stay consistent. Some have started and stopped so many times that they’ve convinced themselves this time will end exactly the same way.

Those thoughts can feel incredibly real. But feeling true and being true are not the same thing.

They are often stories you’ve repeated for so long that they’ve become part of how you see yourself.

The truth is that every athlete, every coach, and every person you admire had a day one. They’ve experienced doubt, fear, setbacks, imperfect seasons, and days when showing up felt hard.

What separates the people who continue moving forward isn’t perfection.

It’s the willingness to keep taking the next small step.

Stories of Breaking Free

I think back to one of my own defining moments.

When I first tried CrossFit, I was a single mom balancing a business, parenting, and a thousand other responsibilities. Every workout felt like a test.

Some days I felt strong. Other days I had to scale everything back.

I could have looked at everything already on my plate and decided I didn’t have the time, energy, or ability to take on something else.

Instead, I kept showing up.

I learned to embrace being uncomfortable. I learned that scaling something didn't make the work less meaningful. I learned that I could be challenged without needing to be perfect at it.

That decision changed far more than my body. My mental toughness grew right alongside my physical strength.

I’ve watched the same thing happen with my clients.

One man came to me after a stroke left him with limited mobility on one side of his body. He had been told he would never live an active life again.

Instead of focusing exclusively on everything he could no longer do, we started with what he could do. We found ways for him to move safely and continued building from there.

Over time, he became stronger and more confident.

And one of the most powerful changes wasn't simply physical. It was the new story he began telling himself:

I am capable.

Another client, Sophie, repeatedly aggravated an old back injury whenever she tried to restart her fitness journey. She felt caught in a cycle of one step forward and two steps back.

Rather than trying to force her body into another all or nothing approach, we focused on intentional movement, hydration, mindset, and gradually building resilience.

Within months, her body composition improved, but something even more important happened:

She rediscovered confidence she thought she had lost.

These stories remind me again and again that mindset can either keep us trapped in what we believe we can't do, or help us discover what we're actually capable of.

The Power of Small Wins

One of the most effective ways I know to challenge negative thinking is to stack small wins.

You don’t need a dramatic transformation overnight.

You need proof.

Proof that you can do what you told yourself you would do.

And that proof comes from action, not perfection.

Walking into the gym three times this week is a win.

Choosing water instead of soda at lunch is a win.

Adding one extra push up is a win.

Walking for five extra minutes is a win.

Going to bed a little earlier is a win.

Modifying a workout instead of skipping it altogether is a win.

None of those decisions seems particularly life-changing by itself.

But that’s the point.

Small actions repeated consistently become evidence.

Over time, those wins begin building trust between you and yourself. You stop needing to hope you're someone who can follow through because you're creating evidence that you already are.

That self trust becomes confidence.

And confidence makes the voice telling you “I can't” a whole lot quieter.

Strategies to Reframe Negative Thoughts

So what do you actually do when one of those mindset minefields shows up?

Start by noticing it.

Then challenge it.

Here are a few reframes I’ve used both personally and with my clients:

1. Flip the script.

Instead of:

“I can’t because of my injury.”

Try:

“I can find ways to modify my training that support my body and what it needs right now.”

The goal isn't to ignore limitations. It's to stop allowing one limitation to define everything you're capable of doing.

2. Shift perfection into progress.

Instead of:

“If I can’t do it perfectly, it’s not worth doing.”

Try:

“Progress is the goal. Every step counts.”

A 20 minute workout still counts.

An imperfect meal doesn't erase every other healthy choice you've made.

One difficult week doesn't mean you've failed.

3. Challenge comparison.

Instead of measuring your progress against someone else's body, performance, timeline, or circumstances, remind yourself:

“My journey is mine. My progress doesn't have to look like anyone else's.”

Comparison can make meaningful progress feel insignificant simply because someone else is somewhere different.

Stay in your lane and keep moving forward.

4. Focus on what you can control.

You cannot control every stressful day, schedule change, setback, injury, responsibility, or unexpected thing life throws at you.

You can control the next decision.

Your effort.

Your response.

Your consistency.

Your mindset.

Put your energy there.

These reframes may sound simple, but simple doesn't mean insignificant.

Every time you interrupt an old thought and intentionally choose a different response, you're practicing a new way of thinking.

Just like physical strength, mental strength is built through repetition.

SHIFTS as a Mindset Tool

My SHIFTS framework: Sleep, Hydration, Intake, Fitness, Thoughts, and Sunshine... isn't only about physical health.

It can also be a powerful tool for strengthening your mindset.

Each SHIFTS pillar gives you another opportunity to align a small daily choice with the bigger life you're trying to create.

Sleep: Prioritizing recovery teaches you that caring for your body isn't laziness. Recovery is part of progress.

Hydration: Drinking enough water is a simple way to practice consistently meeting one of your body's most basic needs.

Intake: Nourishing yourself intentionally shifts the conversation away from punishment and toward supporting the body you're asking to perform for you.

Fitness: Every time you move your body, you create another opportunity to prove that you are capable of showing up.

Thoughts: You learn to notice the stories you're telling yourself, challenge the ones that aren't serving you, and intentionally practice a different perspective.

Sunshine: Even stepping outside for a few minutes gives you an opportunity to move, reset, breathe, and reconnect with the world around you.

None of these requires perfection.

That's what makes them so powerful.

These small daily habits build resilience because they give you repeated evidence that change is possible, one shift at a time.

Choosing Freedom Over Fear

Mindset minefields aren't going to disappear completely.

Life will continue to bring challenges, setbacks, uncertainty, criticism, hard seasons, and circumstances you didn't plan for.

The goal isn't to never have another negative thought.

The goal is to stop automatically believing every negative thought you have.

You get to decide what happens next.

You can stay inside the story of “I can't,” or you can become curious about what might happen if you try.

Every small win, every reframe, and every daily shift is another step toward freedom.

It's another opportunity to replace:

“I can't.”

with:

“What can I do today?”

You don't need perfect conditions.

You don't need flawless execution.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin.

You only need the courage to start where you are, use what you have, and trust that every step forward matters.
