5 Simple Strategies for Building a Stronger, Healthier Family
Creating a healthy lifestyle for ourselves can sometimes feel challenging enough. Add children, work, school, sports, activities, travel, appointments, meals, and everything else that comes with family life, and it can be easy to feel like there simply isn’t enough time.
But living a healthy life as a family doesn’t have to mean doing everything perfectly.
As a coach, lifelong athlete, and mom of two children born nearly 20 years apart, I’ve experienced very different seasons of motherhood while continuing to train, coach, work, and build businesses. One thing I’ve learned is that some of the most powerful things we can do for our health are also some of the simplest.
And our children are watching what we do.
The goal isn’t to create a household obsessed with health or fitness. It’s to create an environment where movement, nourishing food, sleep, time outside, connection, and taking care of ourselves are simply part of life.
Here are five practical ways to start.
1. Build Meals Around Nourishment, Not Perfection
Nutrition can become unnecessarily complicated very quickly.
For families, I prefer focusing on building a strong nutritional foundation rather than labeling foods as strictly “good” or “bad.”
Whenever possible, build meals around a variety of nutrient dense foods, including:
Protein: Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, tofu, and other protein rich foods can help support growth, muscle, recovery, and many essential functions throughout the body.
Fruits and Vegetables: Different colors provide different combinations of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and beneficial plant compounds. Variety matters.
Carbohydrates: Rice, potatoes, oats, whole grains, fruit, and other carbohydrate sources provide energy... something especially important for active children and adults.
Healthy Fats: Nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, fatty fish, and other sources of dietary fat provide essential nutrients and support numerous functions throughout the body.
Hydration: Water is one of the simplest foundations of health, yet it’s easy to overlook when everyone is busy.
This doesn’t mean your family can never have pizza, dessert, birthday cake, or go out to dinner.
Health is what we do consistently, not what happens at one meal.
I want children to grow up understanding that food fuels their bodies, supports the things they love to do, brings people together, and can also simply be enjoyed.
2. Make Movement Part of Family Life
Movement doesn’t always have to look like a formal workout.
Walk the dog. Ride bikes. Go hiking. Swim. Dance in the kitchen. Play at the park. Throw a ball. Practice a sport. Do gymnastics. Explore somewhere new.
Make movement fun.
Children naturally learn through play, and one of the greatest things we can do is encourage them to continue moving, exploring, and discovering what their bodies are capable of.
The same is true for adults.
Your movement may include structured strength and conditioning, and I’m a huge believer in strength training, but it can also include walking, mobility, recreational sports, playing with your kids, or simply getting outside.
I want fitness to help us participate more fully in our lives, not become another obligation keeping us from them.
And when our children see us moving because we enjoy being strong, capable, healthy, and active, not because we’re punishing ourselves for what we ate, they learn something important too.
3. Protect Sleep & Recovery
Sleep is the first “S” in my SHIFTS Framework: Sleep, Hydration, Intake, Fitness, Thoughts, and Sunshine.
That’s intentional.
Sleep supports growth and development in children and plays an important role in physical recovery, learning, memory, mood, immune function, and overall health for all of us.
Sleep needs also differ by age. Children and teenagers generally need more sleep than adults, which is why a blanket “everyone needs eight hours” isn’t particularly useful.
Instead, create routines that make quality sleep easier.
Try keeping bedtime and wake times relatively consistent, creating a calming wind down routine, reducing stimulating activities near bedtime, and making bedrooms comfortable environments for sleep.
And remember: family life isn’t perfect.
There will be sick kids, travel, newborn stages, late games, stressful weeks, and nights when nobody sleeps as well as they hoped.
We’re building healthy patterns and resiliency over time, not chasing perfection.
4. Get Outside, Play & Soak Up Some Sunshine
There’s a reason Sunshine earned its own place in SHIFTS.
Getting outside gives families an opportunity to move, play, connect, explore, and step away from screens and other distractions.
Natural light also provides important cues to our circadian rhythm, helping our bodies regulate the sleep wake cycle.
And yes, sunlight can contribute to vitamin D production in the skin, although how much someone produces varies considerably based on factors such as location, season, skin pigmentation, clothing, sunscreen use, and time spent outside. Vitamin D can also come from certain foods and, when medically appropriate, supplementation.
But getting outside doesn’t need to become another health assignment.
Go have fun.
Head to the beach. Walk around the neighborhood. Explore a trail. Go to the playground. Garden. Play a game. Watch the sunset.
Some of the best things we can do for our health don’t feel like “health and wellness” at all.
They just feel like living.
5. Model the Habits You Want Your Children to Carry With Them
This may be the most important one.
We can tell our children to eat well, move their bodies, put their phones down, sleep, drink water, speak kindly to themselves, and take care of their health.
But they’re also watching us.
They hear how we talk about our bodies.
They see whether exercise looks like something we love or something we use as punishment.
They notice whether we rest when we need it.
They see how we handle stress, setbacks, food, work, relationships, and our own health.
That doesn’t mean we have to model perfection. I actually think there is tremendous value in allowing our children to see us learn, adjust, grow, and take care of ourselves through real life.
For me, this is one of the most meaningful parts of health and wellness.
Long before I became a mother, I knew I wanted to create a healthy relationship with fitness, food, body image, and wellness that I could someday pass on to my own family. Now, as a mom, that matters to me even more.
We have an opportunity to give our children something incredibly valuable: a foundation they can carry with them long after they leave our homes.
Healthy Families Are Built Through Everyday Life
A healthy family isn’t created by having a perfect refrigerator, never eating sugar, completing perfect workouts, or following an elaborate wellness routine.
It’s built through everyday choices.
Sleep.
Hydration.
Nourishing food.
Movement.
Thoughts.
Sunshine.
Connection.
Play.
Rest.
And a whole lot of real life in between.
Those simple choices add up.
My mission has always been to help people live their strongest, healthiest, and happiest lives possible, and I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give our families is helping create a foundation that allows them to do the same.
Not for 30 days.
For a lifetime.
Live STRONG. Live HEALTHY. Live HAPPY.
